Paneghe: The Podcast

Culture

Sumba inspires everything we do. This Marapu land is rich with myths, beliefs, rituals, ancestral wisdom, craftsmanship, and ways of life that have never been written in books—because they were never meant to be.

For centuries, Sumbanese culture has lived in the voices of its people, passed from elder to child, from storyteller to listener, through the sacred practice of oral transmission.

In a world where so much risks being forgotten, we want to honor this ancient tradition while helping to preserve it for future generations. We continue to learn about Sumba from our team, from our Kodi neighbors, from many Sumbanese, and everyone who loves the island we meet along the way, each sharing a piece of the Sumba’s remarkable cultural heritage.

Through Paneghe: The Podcast, we invite you to discover these stories with us—many of which you may have never heard before. Paneghe means "to talk" or "to have a conversation" in Kodinese, and it is through talking that Sumbanese knowledge has survived and thrived.

With every episode, we create a space where Sumbanese voices can be heard and remembered, where conversations celebrate the culture, traditions, and people who keep them alive. By listening, you become part of this living tradition—helping to carry these stories forward, just as generations have done before us, and just as we do every day here at Cap Karoso.

#1: Marapu, Sumbanese Shamanism, and Calvin’s Journey as Sumba’s First Yoga Teacher

For the very first episode of Paneghe: The Podcast, we begin with a story that has quietly unfolded within the walls of Cap Karoso itself—introducing Calvin, who we believe to be the very first Sumbanese yoga teacher.

Before many guests knew Calvin as a yoga teacher and spiritual guide, he was serving drinks at our Apicine Bar—quietly observant, generous with his smile. What most people didn’t see was the deeper path behind that presence: mornings spent in stillness beneath trees, years devoted to meditation and breathwork, and the ancestral stories shared by his grandmother, a village shaman who first introduced him to the spiritual traditions of Sumba.

In this inaugural conversation, Matt Jacob, our artist-in-residence and host of his own Mood Podcast, sits down with Calvin to explore the journey that led him here. Today, Calvin works with the team at our Malala Spa, where he weaves Sumbanese shamanic knowledge into the spa experience, guiding yoga sessions and healing journeys inspired by the island’s ancestral wisdom. Together, Matt and Calvin open a dialogue about spirituality, heritage, and the ways ancient traditions can find new expression in the modern world, right here in Sumba.
